Storm Death Toll Now At 5; Tornado Confirmed in Cypress

The day after another deadly storm ripped through Houston, Mayor John Whitmire and Judge Lina Hidalgo held their first joint news conference.

The big take-aways were that the death total has now been raised to 5, the damage assessment is on-going, and for some the power outages could take days, if not weeks.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado did touch down in Cypress, and that there were 100 mph straight line winds in downtown Houston, while 90 mph winds rocked Baytown.

There are still more than 600,000 CenterPoint customers without power. The total damage and all that were impacted won't be known until tomorrow. CenterPoint is also sending 4K additional workers to help. And Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent DPS officers to help with traffic.

Mayor Whitmire then spent some time surveying the damage downtown, and said to avoid downtown if you don't need to be there. There are 2,500 traffic lights that are out.

The Mayor was also asked about the Astros-Brewers game going on tonight as scheduled. "It wouldn't be my decision" he said, adding that those who do go need to be safe, and use common sense, while also adding that alcohol and the storm aftermath are not a good mix.
